Ring, the Amazon company best known for its video doorbell, is making the leap to the vehicle dashboard.
The company’s new Car Cam, unveiled Thursday morning, is designed to record video while driving or parked using a dual-facing camera that captures events both inside and outside the vehicle.
It’s powered by the vehicle battery using the on-board diagnostics (OBD-II) port. It can connect via LTE in transit using an optional Ring Protect Go subscription, or via home WiFi in the garage or driveway, according to a post by Ring CTO Josh Roth.
Announced by Amazon at the Consumer Electronics Show, it’s available for pre-order for $200 but will later sell for $250, shipping in February. Competitors include Garmin, Nextbase, and other existing dash cam makers.
Ring has significantly expanded its lineup of home cameras, sensors, and security technology since its acquisition by Amazon in 2018 for more than $1 billion.
