Amazon’s newest board member is Andrew Ng, a business and technology leader, serial startup founder, investor, and educator who specializes in machine learning, artificial intelligence, and online education.
Ng, who co-founded online education company Coursera, is managing general partner of the AI Fund venture studio, founder of education technology company DeepLearning.AI, founder and CEO of the Landing AI computer vision startup, and a Stanford University adjunct professor who was previously Baidu’s chief scientist and the head of the Google Brain deep learning project.
Announcing his appointment to the board Thursday morning, Amazon said Ng “will help to inform the Board’s perspective on the opportunities and challenges that AI presents and its transformative social and business potential.”
Judith McGrath, an Amazon board member since 2014, has opted not to seek re-election to the board this year, the company said in its proxy statement Thursday.
Ng joined the Amazon board as of April 9 and will be up for election along with other board members at the company’s annual shareholder meeting on May 22.
With these changes, here are Amazon’s 12 board members:

- Jamie Gorelick, partner with Wilmer Cutler Pickering Hale and Dorr LLP.
- Daniel Huttenlocher, dean of MIT Schwarzman College of Computing.
- Andrew Ng – Managing general partner, AI Fund, and founder of DeepLearning.AI and Landing AI.
- Indra Nooyi – former chair and CEO of PepsiCo.
- Jonathan Rubinstein – Former co-CEO of Bridgewater Associates, former executive with Apple, Palm, and Hewlett-Packard.
- Brad Smith, president of Marshall University, former executive chair, president and CEO of Intuit.
- Patricia Stonesifer, former president and CEO of Martha’s Table, former CEO of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.
- Wendell Weeks, chairman and CEO of Corning Inc., a materials science innovator and manufacturer.
